A cost conscious purchaser of an Apple iPod should give due consideration to the iPod Shuffle. Coming in both 512MB and 1GB memory sizes, this little marvel gives up to 12 hours playing time before needing recharging. It weighs almost nothing and is ridiculously small in physical size. In addition, Apple have deliberately designed in lower cost of manufacture that keeps the over all cost of the product relatively low.

It is easy to underrate this product because at first glance it looks so insignificant. However, anybody that does so doesn't see the large impact the product can have in the miniature memory market. As the Flash memory is equivalent to that in the traditional hard disk based model, it is entirely possible that Apple will become the dominant consumer of the Flash memory marketplace.

Indeed it is this Flash memory, supplied by Samsung Electronics, that forms the bulk of the build cost, so Apple have gone to great lengths to find off-setting cost reductions in the design to compensate. As a result, the iPod Shuffle controls are minimal but very effective. The is no LCD display, but then its not needed as all functions are secondary to the shuffle feature.

In the default setting, the iPod Shuffle will randomly pick its play schedule from the play list of songs stored in its memory. This means that songs are never played in the same sequence twice, thus eliminating the curse of fixed sequence recordings whereby after several playings, the mind begins to anticipate the start of the following track automatically. Using the shuffle feature helps keep each song fresh and individual. For those that like to play an album all the way through as recorded, a small button on the reverse of the player allows the feature to be turned off.

A USB v2.0 connector is included in the sales pack and this allows connection to any modern PC or Mac computer. When connected, this actually allows the iPod Shuffle internal memory to act as a file storage device, either temporary or permanently for such things as pictures and special documents. Recharging of the iPod Shuffle batteries can also take place through the USB cable and this gives up to four hours of charge for use by the player.

The main purpose of the USB connection is of course to transfer music to the iPod Shuffle for personal hearing pleasure and this is achieved with a feature called 'Autofill'. 'Autofill' assesses how much memory is available in the player's memory and then selects a number of tunes to be downloaded. The particularly clever bit is that it will automatically do this either from a random selection from the complete library play list, or from a fixed schedule play list you supply. In either event, it chooses and then transfers, the number of tunes required to fit the available memory. Some people will be relieved to find that this feature too can be turned off if not required.

The iPod Shuffle sales pack includes a handy lanyard for wearing the player around th the neck, which allows it to be worn during most activities. This versatility is further enhanced by the use of Flash memory which has no moving parts, unlike the traditional hard disk of previous Ipods which would undoubtedly 'skip' during play if an activity was too vigorous.
